Monumental open-air swimming pool built in 1927. Only open during the months May, June, July, and August. It has a heated 50m basin surrounded by dressing cubicles. During the 1928 Amsterdam Olympics, Johnny Weismuller, who later became famous as Tarzan, trained here and won a gold medal at the 100m. He thanked Haarlem’s hospitality afterwards. Entrance €4. |

De Bolwerken park
This park is for runners and dog walkers. Kenaupark
Park lying West of the railway station. Designed by Zocher in 1868. Here you can lie down in the grass and relax on a sunny day in summer. The park is surrounded by large villas. Frederikspark
This park is a national heritage site. Designed in 1862 by famous Dutch landscape architect J.D. Zocher Jr., who built the oldest villa estate of the Netherlands here. The villas are draped around an oval field of grass, on which the first official football match in the Netherlands was played in 1886. This is the heart of Haarlem. The most beautiful square in the Netherlands. Go stand on this cast iron pivot bridge spanning the river Spaarne at its narrowest point. Some people say you have the most beautiful view of Haarlem standing on this bridge. The Spaarne is not a real river, it's an an old peat bog stream with no direction. Anyway, this "river" has been important for Haarlem, and Haarlem is also called Spaarnestad (Spaarne city). |
